Dog Walking by the Lady Dogwalker

by Nenita Wells

Morning is her worst time of day, but

It quickly changed with anticipation and glee.

She is alone but always with company

In her mind, it is often clear, you will see.

Today, she will be with friends she loved and cared.

Prayed. Wore her favorite clothes and baseball cap

And put on a pair of her comfortable walking shoes.

Inhaled, exhaled and she went out the door.

Dog walking to the avenues, passing the coffee shop,

Passing the newspaper stand, passing the fruit vendor.

The bakery's fresh bread aroma in the air wafting,

Savoring, imagining, energized and walking.

At the front door, there eagerly await

Friends familiar with the morning trip.

She picked up eight more dogs stopping, walking,

Humming a song and saying, "Good morning!".

Love and care she gives to her friends.

She nurtured them and they nurtured her.

The love she gave and the love she received

A boon, and a new lease of life unfolded.

This poem is dedicated to the dogwalkers in New York City where I lived for 27 years . I have seen dogwalkers picking up and dropping off dogs to owners at the door of their apartment building with such love and understanding. This activity is repeated in the afternoon and it is such a wonderful sight -- a dogwalker with up to eight dogs in her or his care.
