Role Model: Tim Tebow, Florida Gators Quarterback Will Win the 2009 Heisman Trophy, IMHO

Pam Tebow was sick with an amoebic dysentery while pregnant. The medication that she was taking caused complication in her pregnancy wherein the placental lining has separated from the uterus. The fetus was in danger.

The doctor expected a stillbirth and advised Pam to have an abortion. Bob and Pam disagreed because of their faith and she carried the baby to term. Bob thought that they lost the baby four times and that he is a miracle baby. She survived and gave birth to a boy and named him Timothy Richard Tebow.

He was born in Manila , Philippines on August 14, 1987. His parents were Christian missionaries at that time. In 1985 the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association founded an orphanage providing a Christian home for orphaned Filipino children in the southern island of the Philippines . It is now home to 49 orphans and 13 staff.

Timmy, as the family fondly called him is one of five children. The Tebow children were instructed by their mother in an educational program outside of the established schools, instilling in them the family's Christian beliefs. They were home-schooled.

In Florida , home-schooled students are allowed to compete in local high school sports events and may participate on the team of the local school in the school district in which they live.

He was named Florida 's Player of the Year as a Junior and again the following season as a Senior. He played quarterback for Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach , Florida . He was ranked among the top quarterback prospects in the nation.

Before enrolling at the University of Florida , Tim Tebow spent the last three summers in the Philippines assisting with his father's orphanage and missionary work.

Tim Tebow's awards include the following:

2007 Heisman Trophy

2007 Davey O'Brien Award

2008 Manning Award

2007 & 2008 Maxwell Award

2007 Sullivan Award

Associated Press Player of the Year

2008 & 2009 Best Male College Athlete ESPY Award

2008 Wuerffel Trophy

Tim Tebow's role model is Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy winner. Wuerffel also attended the University of Florida . Wuerffel is the son of a Lutheran chaplain in the United States Air Force. After his National Football League career, he has been engaged in charitable work in New Orleans . Wuerffel began work at Desire Street Ministries, a non-profit, faith-based organization in New Orleans . Louisiana .

Urban Meyer, Tebow's coach, said, "His character is about as good as you can have. He is a good Christian, treats you with respect, a guy who wants to be around his family. He has an impeccable character."

Tebow's priorities in life are: 1. Faith in God

2. Family

3. Academics

4. Football

In March 2008, he went to the Philippines , a 20-hour flight, ministering to the orphans. The Filipino orphans look up to him as their role model. He helped alongside with medical personnel, with their healthcare needs.

"My name is Timmy. I am so glad to be here today because I love the Philippines . I have to share the good news and that good news is that God loves you.", was his opening speech as eager children listened intently to what he was saying.

Tim Tebow is a man of character and has a heart, passion for youth and helping people, a real role model.

The five finalists for the 2009 Heisman Trophy are Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow, Texas quarterback, Colt McCoy, Alabama's running back, Mark Ingram, Stanford's running back, Toby Gerhart and Nebraska's defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

In my humble opinion, if given that privilege to vote, I will vote for him as the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner.

Thanks for the article. It's a great and inspiring story.

Tim Tebow is a great football player and a man of character, but Florida is one of my least favorite teams. So I won't be dissapointed if he doesn't win. Besides I like Archie being the only two time winner.

Wow! Ms. Wells, I am inspired by your article. I didn't even know who Tim Tebow was until reading it, and I am obviously not a sports fan. Your words created an awe and fascination within me that caused me to want to know more about him. Thank you for giving me this information and showing me a side to the "football jock" that I didn't realize existed. His story is wonderful, and I hope that he does win the Heisman and does the Phillipines proud!

No wonder the guy already won a Heisman Trophy, however, I don't think he'll be doing it again. I had no idea what a good kid he was.

Thanks Nenita for this wonderful background information on Tim Tebow.

In response to your question (via e-mail), I don't think he will win it this year and here are my reasons:

*I think that Florida is not the team it has been in the past and that has an impact on Heisman voters

*I think that players such as Alabama's Ingram and Texas' McCoy have done a little bit more this year to distinguish themselves

*Only one other person has won 2 Heismans, Ohio State's Archie Griffin in the 70's and I don't see anyone repeating that anytime soon

*I believe that Heisman voters will be looking for a running back to bestow the trophy on --- it works that way sometimes

*I think that as wonderful as Tim Tebow is, many people, including Heisman voters, have Tebow-fatigue. He has received a lot of hype (a great deal of it deserved), but it can work against you sometimes

Now, who do I think will win it? Mark Ingram of Alabama --- he's on the No.1 ranked team that just beat Florida convincingly in the SEC championship AND he scored 3 touchdowns against them. Those are the type of performances that Heisman voters eat up.

None of this should be construed, however, as me not liking Tim Tebow --- I like him a lot.

Thanks again Nenita for this informative and interesting article. God bless you.

Hello Dr. Rhymes. I am humbled by your taking the time to read and comment on my piece. The Gators lost the SEC championship and that puts Ingram right on top. I agree with all the reasons you have outlined here. Thank you for your kind response. God bless you and may you have a very happy holiday season.
I am truly grateful.
