Promises of the Heart For a Special Valentine's Day

by Nenita Wells

You are the answer to the wish I made,

When I saw a shooting star on a clear night sky.

Promise me not to gather the stars in heaven,

For they have their own place in the galaxy.

No need to promise me life will be a bed of roses,

For I only need the comfort of your embrace.

No need to promise me there will be no adversities

As long as we stand together, we can overcome.

You do not have to promise me a trip to wonderland,

For you provide a wondrous attraction to my being.

No need for a romantic vacation to the city of lovers,

For right here in my heart is the place I felt your love.

No need for you to adorn my finger with diamonds,

For your brilliance is enough to light my life.

There is no need for you to give me a string of pearls,

For you have given me a promise ring of commitment.

Why do you need to swim the depth of the ocean,

Just to prove your never ending love for me?

Just stay with me and let me feel your gentle breath,

And you can fathom the love I felt for you.

There is no need to put me up on a pedestal,

Up there will not afford me the chance to grow.

No need for you to spread a carpet of promises,

I simply need the reassurance of your love.

Shower me not with gifts and bouquet of flowers,

For flowers will wither and their scents vanish.

Write me the lyrics of an old-fashioned love tune,

And I will heartily sing its melodious notes.

Oh my love, write not your promises in the sand,

For the ebbing water will wash them away.

Write your emotions in a form of a sonnet,

Like Cupid's arrow it will pierce my heart.
