Holidays and Special Occasions in the Month of March. A Poem in Villanelle Poetic Form

Posted: Sunday, March 07, 2010

by Nenita Wells

There are so many holidays and special days in the month of March (2010), the following are some of them.

I was thinking of incorporating all of the above holidays into poems in a cinquain poetic form to celebrate these special days in the month of March. I decided to focus on one of the holidays as the subject of my poem in villanelle. So, here it is. I hope you will like it.

Baba Marta, Grandmother March Day in Bulgaria

( in Villanelle poetic form)

A mystical figure is Baba Marta.

First day of March, people expressing.

Greetings! Chestita Baba Marta.

Celebrated with parades in Bulgaria.

People welcome the coming of Spring.

Wearing red and white yarn martenitsa.

Is the winter ending? Is it sunny in Sofia?

Grandma March is a lady with mood contrasting

Greetings! Chestita Baba Marta.

Martenitsas are worn until you see a stork or swallow,

Until the flowers of the trees are blooming,

Through March as winter's gusting wind ceased to blow.

It is Grandma March Day in Bulgaria.

Children reciting poems and singing,

Greetings! Chestita Baba Marta.

Woven tassels of red and white martenitsa

Tied to trees signifying rebirth, as winter is fighting

To hang on and eventually loses to Spring, aha!

Greetings! Chestita Baba Marta.

The above poem is in villanelle poetic form. There are 19 lines. 5 tercets (3 lines) and 1 concluding quatrain (4 lines). The 1st and 3rd lines of the stanza rhyme. Refrains that alternate in the 3rd line in each successive stanza and a couplet.
